It's Getting Hot In Here!
Can AI help solve the challenges that its growth creates?
There is a sizable percentage of the population that views AI as an enemy. I read a lot of concerns online about the use of generative AI and the negative effects that AI data centers have on the environment and neighborhoods. Mainly, the large amount of electricity needed, cooling, and in some cases, the large amounts of water needed. Very valid concerns indeed. But AI, just like any other tool, can be used for good or bad. So, instead of looking at AI as a tool of destruction, look at it as a tool that can solve a problem, even though it might be one that AI...or we humans created.
Since AI doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, let's discuss ways we can:
Optimize cooling systems or data centers
Reduce water consumption
Improve power grid management
Develop new technologies that make AI more sustainable
It doesn't have to stop there. Let's talk about what role the government, companies, researchers, and everyday people should play in this process.
